Commander's Update!

15 November 2005

Warlord Family and Friends,

The past few weeks have been relatively quiet throughout our area of operation. In our continuing push to improve the security of the area, today we began Operation TRIFECTA, a battalion size operation aimed at disrupting the enemy’s ability to plan and operate in an area they considered a safe haven. Our intent is to show them that Task Force 2/2 will choose the time and place of its operations and that we will go anywhere we want, whenever we want. It will continue for some time but the initial reports are very positive. This operation took a lot of detailed planning and preparation by Marines at all levels of the battalion and they performed extremely well.

In our future, we continue to look towards the upcoming governmental elections in mid-December. This will be a very important day as the Iraqi citizens once again are able to use their democratic rights to choose their own government, which will continue to move them forward. The new Iraqi constitution accepted in October was the ground work and the new Iraqi government will lead Iraq towards a future chosen by their people, not by a tyrannical leader bent on meeting only his needs.

One big step towards the new future of Iraq is the recent success of the 1-4-1 Iraqi Army in AO Warlord. This battalion has operated and trained with 2/2 since our arrival. Over the intervening time, the Iraqi Army battalion has continuously improved the performance of the individual jundi, or soldier, increased the ability of its companies and performed as a battalion. In recognition of their development, 1-4-1 Iraqi Army assumed control of its own battlespace where they now operate without any assistance from Marine Corps operational forces. The importance of this is that they are the first unit to do so in the Al Anbar Province and pave the way for future Iraqi Army units. 2/2 continues to train their platoons to increase their performance but all operations are planned and conducted by the Iraqi Army within their own battlespace.

On 10 November 2005, TF 2/2 and its companies celebrated the Marine Corps’ 230th birthday. Those companies operating in firm bases had a cake and hot chow delivered to them. Despite combat operations, each command conducted a ceremony marking this important day, following tradition, the 13th Commandant General Lejeune’s message was read along with the message of our current Commandant. The customary “Cake Cutting” was done with the oldest and youngest Marines sharing cake. At the Battalion CP H&S Company conducted a superb birthday ceremony with Easy and Weapons in attendance. I had the privilege as being the Guest of Honor. Sgt Roper with our Civil Affairs Det was the oldest Marine present, born in 1952. He completed his first enlistment in 1975 when he exited service. 30 years later, he offered his services to the Marine Corps and deployed as a sergeant with our Civil Affairs Detachment at age 53. Our youngest Marine, L/Cpl Aaron Davenport, from Supply in H&S Company was also honored at the ceremony. He was born in September 11th , in 1986.

In closing, I must again thank all our family and friends back home that do remarkable work everyday to maintain our morale and fighting spirit. You are true “force multipliers” for the Task Force and I remain forever in your debt. Please enjoy your “Thanksgiving Holiday” as we give thanks to you for your continued support. May God continue to bless you and the Men of this magnificent Task Force
I remain Semper Fidelis
